Rashmirathi by Ramdhari Singh Dinkar

Rashmirathi is the creation by a freedom fighter and a former Member of Parliament, a Sahitya Akademi awardee, our beloved Rashtra Kavi, Shri Ramdhari Singh Dinkar.

This book is a poetic journey into the turbulent life and times of Karna, the dejected child of Kunti. He was the son of Lord Sun. This epic in its own terms elaborates the righteous behaviour and very high moral values that were followed by this great hero throughout his life, even when he himself had to face the worst societal taboos during his childhood. He is a perfect example of sacrifice, morality, courage, diligence, loyalty, empathy and above all kindness and deep love for every drop of positivity.

This whole book is a single poem divided into chapters talking about the life of Karna. It is considered one of the most interesting and engaging interpretation of the Mahabharata, the longest epic in the world.

This creation is a literary masterpiece with the unique usage of 'chhand' form of Hindi poetry. Dinkar ji uses different 'alankars' or 'figure of speeches' in English language with such proficiency that while reading you will feel every sentence is inciting the same valour and pain that Karna might have experienced in his own life. Reading this book is an adventurous experience in itself. It makes you live the highs and lows of life in mere words.

Dinkar ji's writing acumen has really made this text a visual treat. Throughout the epic, you will feel the presence of the different characters of the Mahabharata around you. To put it in a humorous tone, you might get the Munna Bhai MBBS experience of Sanjay Dutt, where he feels the actual presence of 'Bapu' or Gandhi ji.

Rashmirathi is a satire that targets every social taboo that divides the society, from caste-ism to blue blood- ism. It does this in the most intellectually entertaining manner. Its satire is meant for the educated and affluent fools, who committedly adhere to this societal setup and do not have the courage to challenge this exploiting framework.

Rashmirathi keeps a very positive connotation throughout its approach and keeps fostering the power of positive efforts for a bigger change in each one's life. It glorifies every individual who defies all odds to prove his mettle and be blessed with the fruits of success. It strengthens your belief in an idealistic moral value based lifestyle. It teaches you commitment to your cause and to the people who have enabled in your life at any step, and never back down from your commitment, even when God himself tries to dissuade your stand.

This book is a must read for everyone who has even the least respect for the written word or who has a realization of the power of expression. The best way to show our gratitude and give the beloved 'Rashtra Kavi' a true tribute is to use his own words for Karna for him as well.

The world got poor the day; we lost you, Shri Ramdhari Singh Dinkar…
