India’s City Montessori School (CMS) is the world’s largest school with an enrollment of over 52,000 students. It has held the ‘Guinness Book of World Records 2010-11’ for the largest school with a record admission of 39,437 pupils. Based in Uttar Pradesh, this English medium school has eighteen campuses across the city of Lucknow and offers education from Pre-school to Grade 12.


Founded in 1959 by Dr. Bharti Gandhi and Dr. Jagdish Gandhi, the school is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE). The husband-wife duo founded the City Montessori School in a rented premises with just five students and a borrowed capital of Rs. 300.



In 2002, CMS was awarded the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education. The school has also received the 'Hope of Humanity' Award from spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. In 2014, CMS Society was recognized with the United Nations Department of Public Information as an affiliated NGO.
